b. 1953

Edward Rice was born in Augusta, Georgia in 1953 and raised in North Augusta, SC where he maintains his studio to this day.  The artist was trained in Augusta by Chicago artists Freeman Schoolcraft (b. 1905, trained by Loredo Taft).  Edward Rice has been a practicing painter for over thirty years.  He is widely known for his paintings of historic buildings, both from the Southeastern United States and abroad.  His expressive use of light is reminiscent of that of Edward Hopper, and it evokes unique and hauntingly personal depictions of these vernacular structures.  Rice paints in a carefully planned, pre-modern style, building comprehensive under-paintings that are then followed by layers of color.  In addition to oil painting, Rice began experimenting with the monotype process in 2002.  His monotype prints offer a looser, more instinctive interpretation of his oil paintings, and a glimpse at an artist’s ability to flawlessly translate years of experience across media.

Rice’s  work has been included in many exhibitions in prestigious galleries including Babcock Galleries, New York; Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe; Heath gallery, Atlanta; Barbara Archer Gallery, Atlanta. His works can be found in the permanent collections of many southeastern museums, including the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans; The Georgia Museum of Art, Athens; The Morris Museum of Art, Augusta; and the Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville. Rice is a past recipient of a South Carolina Arts Commission Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Arts Federation Regional Fellowships.
